"Reuniting our Youth with our Elders"

The WiseTies Community Enrichment Program is an effective inter-generational bridge.

It links high school youth and people in the over 65 community. These youth conduct in depth live interviews and surveys with elder volunteers. These may or may not be direct relatives. This encourages a bond between them and exposes the youth to a great repository of experiential knowledge.

Our Interview and Survey questions guide and inspire thoughtful responses. The secret of interesting interviews is in the particulars of each person’s experience or situation. Details and specifics are more interesting than facts or yes/no answers.

Who interviews who and how?

While it will typically be a High School Student recording the interview, it is also encouraged for the Elder to interact and inquire of the Student’s thoughts and experiences. This is supervised and directed by the program facilitator.

What subjects are covered?

Surveys are targeted to discover both demographic and social interest information. The Interview is designed to explore the major eras of life. Questions inquire into memories or attitudes about; childhood, schooling, family, parenting, significant social events and issues past and present, aging, hopes, ideals, etc.

How long does the interview last?

Generally allow 1 to 4 hours of recording. This depends upon the depth of the interview and if related materials are provided by the elder (this may be copies of photos, clippings, poetry, etc.) There may be limitations of how much time student’s have to gather and organize their interviews.

Is the information gathered protected regarding privacy?

Yes. Either a pseudonym or first name only and no personal data will be used in publication and record keeping.

Will this information be made public?

Yes. The WiseTies Community Enrichment Program will actively maintain an online “WiseTies Repository”.

WiseTies is an interactive cultural heritage trust that collects, organizes, and makes the repository searchable. Each community is represented via the contributions of the local schools, organizations and private parties involved.

Would you or your organization like to participate and/or make a tax deductible contribution to WiseTies? If so, please contact our office for more information.
